Ragavendra Baliga (born March 17, 1960) is a board-certified Indian-born American cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. He subspecializes in heart failure and transplantation, non-invasive cardiology and preventive cardiology.

Dr. Baliga is a Professor of Medicine at The Ohio State University School of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio and a consulting editor of Heart Failure Clinics of North America.

Ragavendra Baliga Career

Baliga graduated from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore with an MBBS in 1984 and from Bangalore Medical College and Bangalore University with a post-doctoral degree in medicine in 1988.

He co-founded St. John’s Journal of Medicine in 1988 with Prof. Anura Kurpad, MD. The journal was later edited by Profs. Ashley D’Cruz, MBBS, MS, MCH, and Sunitha Simon Kurpad, MD. This publication has been revived after a break and is now known as St. John’s Medical Journal.

The National Spinal Injuries Center, connected with Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury, Oxford Regional Health Authority, and St. Mary’s Medical School, Paddington, London, is where he worked alongside Prof. Hans Frankel, FRCP, and Prof. Christopher J. Mathias, FRCP.

He studied the post-prandial cardiovascular hemodynamics in quadriplegics, which provided new information. He collaborated alongside Prof James Petrie, FRCP, afterwards President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Prof Peter Brunt, FRCP, Prof John Webster, FRCP, and Prof Nigel Benjamin as a Registrar at the University of Aberdeen between 1990 and 1992.

He relocated from Scotland to Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, where he worked at the MRC Cyclotron Center alongside Prof. J. Kooner, FRCP, and Prof. Paolo Camici, FRCP. He worked on studies looking at early coronary artery disease in people from the Indian subcontinent and also looked at postprandial hemodynamics.

Later, he moved to the US to work at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he tutored Harvard medical students on the New Pathway. Additionally, he collaborated with Harvard Medical School Professor Prof. Andrew Selwyn, FRCP.

At Boston University Medical Center, he worked with Dr. Wilson S. Colucci, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology, and at UT Southwestern Medical Center, he collaborated with Drs. Clyde Yancy and Mark Drazner.

Although Baliga is best known for his book 250 Cases in Clinical Medicine, which was first published by Balliere Tindall as 200 Cases in Clinical Medicine in June 1993 and was later published by W.B. Saunders, an imprint of Elsevier, he has written or edited a number of other books as well.

His other works include 500 MCQs for the MRCP Part I, also by Saunders, published in 1997, and Self-assessment in Clinical Medicine, also by Saunders, albeit it is in its third edition. Popularity has risen for a more recent book, Practical Cardiology, which was co-edited by Dr. Kim A. Eagle and released by Lippincott Wilkins.
