There are a variety of techniques to assist relieve a congested nose, from chicken soup to neti pots to over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
If you’ve been sick for more than two weeks, see your doctor. If you’re having trouble breathing, try these strategies:
Steam can thin mucus and help it drain from your nose, whether it comes from a hot shower or a steaming cup of tea. Fill a big dish halfway with boiling water for immediate relief. Lean over the bowl, cover your head with a cloth, and inhale the steam. You can repeat this process three to four times per day.
Spicy Chicken Soup
Hot soup can relieve stuffy nose and chicken soup, in particular, maybe the gold standard for loosening mucus. It tastes wonderful and will help you feel less congested.
To soften, loosen, and wash away mucus and relieve a stuffy head, use a nasal irrigation kit or neti pot to rinse the inside of your nose. A neti pot resembles a miniature teapot. It’s available at your neighborhood pharmacy. Pick up some saline solution while you’re there. Alternatively, you can create it at home. Mix 1 cup of warm distilled bottled water, a pinch of baking soda, and half a teaspoon of salt For maximum results use the nasal wash 1 to 2 times per day.
When you’re unwell, why do you feel stuffy? It is because your nose’s blood vessels enlarge and restrict your airways. These veins can be shrunk using over-the-counter decongestants, making it easier to breathe. Look for the components phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine on the label. Nasal decongestant sprays act in the same way. But be cautious! If you use them for more than 4 or 5 days in a row, your nose may become even stuffier. These products can make you feel uneasy or unpleasant at times.
Peppermint and its major active component, menthol, are natural decongestants that can help thin out chest congestion. They’re in a lot of chest massages and cough drops. Peppermint tea is another option. You can either buy it or manufacture it yourself: 1 teaspoon dried peppermint, steeped for 10 minutes in a cup of hot water. A cup can be consumed up to five times each day.
