How To Take Augmentin

Augmentin should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Read all drug guides or instruction sheets and follow all guidelines on your prescription label.

It’s possible that taking Augmentin before the start of a meal will help it perform better. Take the drug every 12 hours

The extended-release tablet should not be crushed or chewed. Break the pill in half and consume one half at a time, or swallow the full pill. If you have problems taking a complete or half dose, tell your doctor.

Shake the oral suspension (liquid) before you measure a dose. Use the accompanying dosage syringe or a pharmaceutical dose-measuring equipment (not a kitchen spoon).

Certain medical tests may be affected by this medication. Any doctor who treats you should be aware that you are taking Augmentin.

Even if your symptoms improve rapidly, take this prescription for the whole duration recommended. By skipping dosages, you’re increasing your chances of developing a drug-resistant infection. A viral infection, such as the flu or a common cold, cannot be treated with Augmentin.

Keep the tablets free from moisture and heat at room temperature. The oral suspension should be kept in the refrigerator. After 10 days, discard any unused liquid.

Side Effects

The following side effects can be associated with taking Augmentin. They include mild and severe side effects.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information on any potential adverse effects. They can provide you with advice on how to deal with any unpleasant side effects.

Common mild side effects include:

  • skin rash
  • nausea and vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • vaginitis

Severe side effects include:

  • Liver damage
  • Clostridium defficile infection
  • Allergic reaction

Severe side effects are uncommon, but they can happen. If you experience any major side effects, contact your doctor at once. If your symptoms are life-threatening or you believe you’re having a medical emergency, dial 911 or your local emergency number.

Precautions

You should not use Augmentin if you have severe kidney disease, if you have had liver problems or jaundice while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, or if you are allergic to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, such as Amoxil, Ceftin, Cefzil, Moxatag, Omnicef, and others.

If you switch from one tablet form to another (regular or extended-release tablet), take only the new tablet form and strength prescribed for you. Amoxicillin and clavulanate may not be as effective or could be harmful if you do not use the exact tablet form your doctor has prescribed.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Augmentin can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormone method of birth control (such as a condom, diaphragm, spermicide) to prevent pregnancy while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.

Augmentin Price

The average retail price for Augmentin is about $57.25 . The cost may be much lower depending on your insurance plan.
